Coldforming or machining?

Cold forming is suitable for the mass production of parts such as screws, bushes, axles, bolts and stepped shapes. The material saving that can be achieved compared with machining, increases in proportion to parts weight and price. Morevover, cold forming is also a much faster process.
A carefully selected pressing sequence and work hardening (which can be achieved on specific areas only, if required) can render heat treatment unnecessary. The homogeneous materials and favourable fibre direction in cold forging produce parts with excellent tensile load stress, bending and torsional rigidity properties. Further advantages of cold forging are a smooth surface with a depth of roughness similar to a ground surface and good dimensional accuracy. It is also possible to output far more cold forged parts per minute than machined parts.

For the above reasons, the cold forming process is already very popular among engineers today. Our customers appreciate the associated cost advantages, especially when having to manufacture high volumes of parts. Although tool development and tool production costs are quite substantial, they are soon amortised by the savings that are made.
